Open-source Intelligence in the Czech Media Landscape

This thesis maps out the use of open-source intelligence in the Czech media landscape. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the field, a broad theoretical foundation introducing concepts such as Web 2.0, participatory culture, alternative media or the open-source movement is presented. Furthermore, the theoretical part of the thesis includes a classification of basic open-source intelligence techniques and raises an example of an organisation producing open-source intelligence reports. The empirical part of this thesis utilised a mixed approach of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. First, a quantitative analysis of Twitter posts categorised as written in Czech mentioning the keyword 'osint' published from May 2014 to March 2022 was realised. Results indicate a growth in the topic's popularity in Czech internet discourse and suggest a causality between the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and a rising interest in open-source intelligence techniques. The qualitative part of the research makes use of semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted with 5 prominent Czech media actors using open-source intelligence in their media production process. Ethical aspects of citizen photojournalism with a focus on photograpic and audiovisual regords from late twenties until present

The bachelor thesis Ethical aspects of citizen photojournalism with a focus on photographic and audiovisual record from late twenties until present follows up the phenomenon of citizen journalism, which recorded especially in the last decade a sharp rise thanks to the development of information and communication technologies and looks at it from an ethical perspective. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part deals with theoretical notions of ethics and citizen journalism, including the ethical principles of journalism and code of ethics. It also examines the pro and con arguments and another form of citizen journalism, participatory journalism. The second part is devoted to new media from history to present and social networks (Facebook, Twitter etc.), which are closely linked to the development of citizen journalism. The last part has the form of practical examples focusing on photographic and audiovisual records. Citizen photojournalism and videojournalism on Czech news websites

The master's thesis deals with the citizen photojournalism and the citizen videojournalism in the Czech media landscape. It focuses on the frequency of the amateur photographs and videos published on the selected news web sites and also on the gatekeeping process. This master's thesis also reflects the editor's opinions on the citizen photojournalism and the citizen videojournalism. The citizen journalism is usually viewed from the perspective of the citizen journalists, but this master's thesis brings the view from the second side, from the media professionals. The thesis uses the combination of the quantitative and qualitative methods. Firstly, there was conducted the quantitative content analysis. Secondly, there were interviewed the media professionals. The conclusions of the master's thesis indicate that the citizen photojournalism and the citizen videojournalism is rarely used on the Czech web sites. The media professionals evaluate this phenomenon positively, find its contributions to the news flow but only under the certain conditions. On the other hand, they do not find the citizen photojournalism and videojournalism absolutely necessary element for the news service.

The use of social networks as information sources during the floods coverage in 2013 on CT24

This thesis deals with the use of social networks in CT24 emergency continuous broadcasting during the floods in June 2013. Theoretical part describes the phenomena of citizen journalism and focuses on social networks in connection with the use for reporting purposes. Subsequently, I will talk about the news channel CT24. I will briefly describe the basic broadcasting scheme and then I will focus on the interaction of CT24 with the audience during emergency situations. In connection with the topic of the theses I will mention the use of social networks in the broadcasting of CT24 during the floods in 2010. The aim of the practical part is to find out how much CT24 used the information coming from their viewers contributing to the social networks, what was the proportion of the concrete social networks and what was the proportion of the text, photographies and video. Then I will try to find out which areas were mainly observed during the five days period and according to which rules the exact materials were selected in order to contribute to better awareness of the audience. I will analyse how the number of live broadcast of the Czech TV New Media division representatives was changing regarding the development of the situation and whether the presented materials could replace the Czech TV reporter.
